Theme Analysis

The current condition of the material world is one of deep unhappiness, and the root cause is simple: the living entities have fallen out of contact with the Supreme Lord. In Vedic terminology, this state of disconnection is called viyoga. Therefore, the ultimate and only true purpose of all yoga systems is to reverse this condition and re-establish direct contact with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Unless this point of divine contact is achieved, any so-called yoga practice or severe austerity is simply useless labor without any real spiritual benefit.

Because the Supreme Lord is absolute, making contact with Him does not require physical proximity in the material sense. The Lord is entirely non-different from His holy name, His transcendental form, His divine qualities, and His pastimes. By simply hearing the narration of His pastimes or chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, a person immediately contacts the Personality of Godhead through the vibration of transcendental sound. Similarly, associating with a pure representative of the Lord or visiting holy places (dhāmas) like Jagannātha Purī or Vṛndāvana provides the opportunity for immediate divine contact. Through these accessible methods of bhakti, even a neophyte standing on the threshold of spiritual life can successfully reach the Supreme.

When a conditioned soul finally comes into pure contact with the Lord through unalloyed devotional service, the transformation is absolute. Just as an object becomes spiritually reddened when gripped by the Lord, the sinful living entity becomes completely sterilized and purified by divine contact. In this state of brahma-saṁsparśa, material dualities such as joy and sorrow, loss and gain, and honor and dishonor are converted into spiritual energy. The devotee forgets all past material labors and anxieties, manifesting their original spiritual power. Ultimately, this contact culminates in pure love (prema), where the devotee cannot live even for a moment without being in intimate, loving association with the Supreme Lord.

  • The Purpose of Yoga: The entire material world is suffering due to viyoga (disconnection); the sole aim of yoga is to re-establish contact with God.
  • The Absolute Nature of Contact: Because God is absolute, one can contact Him directly by associating with His name, form, pastimes, or pure representatives.
  • The Purifying Effect: Contacting the Supreme Lord immediately sterilizes the living entity of accumulated sins and converts material dualities into spiritual energy.
  • The Perfection of Love: The ultimate result of this divine contact is pure, spontaneous love, where the soul interacts with the Lord in eternal, blissful relationships.
