Theme Analysis

The fundamental distinction between the Supreme Lord and the living entity is their relationship with the material energy. While the Lord is the master of maya, the minute living entity (jiva) is prone to be controlled by maya. This control manifests as the false identification with the material body and the subjection to birth, death, and threefold miseries. Srila Prabhupada uses this distinction to refute the Mayavadi philosophy which claims the soul is identical to God, posing the irrefutable question: "If you are God, how have you come under the control of maya?" The only means to escape this control is not through artificial speculation, but through surrendering to Krishna, which transfers the soul from the clutches of the illusory energy (maha-maya) to the protection of the internal energy (yoga-maya).

  • The Distinction of Power: The Supreme Lord is the controller (Isvara) of the illusory energy, whereas the living entity is minute and subject to being controlled by maya; this difference eternally separates the two.
  • The Mayavadi Fallacy: Srila Prabhupada exposes the flaw in impersonal philosophy by asking how the Supreme Absolute Truth could ever fall under the control of illusion; if God can be covered by maya, then maya would be greater than God.
  • Symptoms of Conditioning: Being controlled by maya means falsely thinking oneself to be the master while actually being kicked by the laws of material nature and forced to transmigrate through various bodies.
  • Liberation through Surrender: One cannot become the controller; one can only choose to be controlled by Krishna or by maya. Freedom from maya is achieved immediately upon surrendering to the Supreme Lord.
