Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the fundamental reality of existence is the distinction between the controller (īśvara) and the controlled (jīva). This category of quotes systematically dismantles the illusion of independence. Whether one admits it or not, everyone is controlled by the stringent laws of material nature and time. The only choice the living entity has is how to be controlled: either by the loving internal energy of Kṛṣṇa or by the punishing external energy of māyā.

  • The Universal Controller: From the highest demigods like Brahmā and Indra to the smallest ant, everyone is under the control of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Even time (kāla) and material nature (prakṛti) work under His direction (mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ).
  • The Illusion of Independence: The conditioned soul falsely thinks they are the proprietor and enjoyer. Śrīla Prabhupāda compares scientists and atheists to "imitation gods" who futilely try to overcome the laws of nature, ignoring the supreme power behind them.
  • Direct vs. Indirect Control: The living entity is always controlled. If one refuses to be controlled by God directly through devotional service, they are automatically controlled by māyā. Surrender means voluntarily accepting the Lord's direct control.
  • The Source of Strength: All energies—material, spiritual, and marginal—are wielded by the Supreme Person. Nothing exists or functions without His sanction.
