Theme Analysis

The Vedic literature provides a complete and flawless science regarding the origin of life and the development of the physical body. Unlike modern materialistic theories which falsely claim that life is generated from inert matter, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the exact opposite is true: matter only develops because of the presence of the eternal spirit soul. The material body is essentially a biological machine that grows and functions solely because the spiritual spark, or seed, is present within it. If the spirit soul leaves, all physical development immediately ceases.

The process of developing a new material body is a precise mechanism driven by the laws of karma. At the time of death, the living entity enters a state of unconsciousness. Based on their past fruitive activities and the specific desires cultivated within their subtle body (mind, intelligence, and ego), the soul is placed under the strict supervision of higher authorities (karmanā daiva-netreṇa). The soul is then injected via the semen of a male into the womb of a specific female. Once inside the womb, the soul takes shelter, and the physical body begins to form around this spiritual seed.

This period of embryonic development takes approximately seven months. During this time, the soul remains unconscious as the physical form grows and develops its various holes, such as the eyes, ears, and mouth. When the body is sufficiently developed, consciousness returns, and the child struggles to come out. Because the conditioned soul falsely identifies with the material energy, they are forced to repeat this painful cycle of entering a womb and developing new bodies life after life. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that just as the soul has the potency to develop a material body, it also possesses the inherent potency to develop its original, eternal spiritual body. By abandoning material desires and cultivating Kṛṣṇa consciousness, the soul can stop the cycle of material development and return to the spiritual world.

  • Spirit is the Basis of Matter: Life is not generated from matter; rather, the material body grows and develops only because the eternal spirit soul is present within it.
  • The Mechanism of Karma: The development of a specific type of body is dictated entirely by the living entity's past fruitive activities and mental desires.
  • Development in the Womb: The soul is injected into the womb via semen, where it remains unconscious for about seven months as the physical body develops around it.
  • The Spiritual Potency: Just as the soul develops a temporary material body through material contamination, it can develop an eternal spiritual body through Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
