Theme Analysis

The phrase "disease of the heart" in the context of Kṛṣṇa consciousness refers to hṛd-roga-kāma, the deep-rooted material lust and desire for sense enjoyment that afflicts every conditioned soul. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, this spiritual malady is the fundamental cause of all suffering and agitation in the material world. As long as this disease of lusty desire remains within the heart, a person cannot experience true mental peace or satisfaction. The mind becomes bewildered, and the living entity is forced to endure the continuous cycle of birth and death, just as a physically diseased person suffers from ongoing bodily ailments.

However, this heart disease is entirely curable provided one takes the correct transcendental medicine. The primary cure is hearing the pastimes of Lord Kṛṣṇa, particularly the highly elevated rāsa-līlā. When a sincere devotee hears about Kṛṣṇa's intimate affairs with the gopīs from a bona fide spiritual master, the result is completely contrary to material expectations: instead of increasing mundane lust, the material disease of the heart is immediately suppressed and vanquished. This powerful medicine elevates the listener directly to the platform of pure devotional service.

Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly warns, however, that this medicine must be received from authorized sources. Hearing about the rāsa dance from impersonalist rascals or imitating it like the prākṛta-sahajiyās will only worsen the disease. Alongside hearing, the daily chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra is prescribed as the ultimate cleansing process (ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam). By constantly vibrating the holy name, the heart disease of material enjoyment decreases, the consciousness is purified, and the soul is naturally attracted to the supreme, healthy state of eternal loving service to God.

  • The Definition of the Disease: The heart disease of the conditioned soul is hṛd-roga-kāma, or the intense, lusty desire for material sense enjoyment.
  • The Symptoms: This spiritual malady causes mental agitation, illusion, and a complete lack of peace and satisfaction.
  • The Medicine of Hearing: Submissively hearing Kṛṣṇa's rāsa-līlā from a bona fide source completely vanquishes the lusty desires in the heart.
  • The Cleansing Process: Chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra acts as the ultimate medicine, cleansing the heart and curing the material disease of greed and lust.
