Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly distinguishes real education—brahma-vidyā—from so-called animal education. True education is meant to awaken inquiry into the living force within the body and to elevate human consciousness toward spiritual realization. When education neglects this purpose, it degrades human life into a polished form of animal existence.

  • True Education is Brahma-vidyā: Education means brahma-vidyā, or inquiry into the living force, the spirit soul (brahma-jijñāsā), which solves the ultimate problems of life: birth, death, old age, and disease.
  • Material Education is Animal Education : Modern education, which focuses on technology, craftsmanship, and the satisfaction of bodily demands (eating, sleeping, mating, defending), is categorized as "animal education."
  • Education Cultivates Virtue : True education makes one gentle, sober, cool-headed, and leads to the qualities of a brāhmaṇa (sense control, truthfulness, cleanliness). It is meant to enlighten one to distinguish right from wrong.
  • Modern Education Creates Śūdras : Education aimed only at securing a service job, where one becomes dependent on others, is the education of a śūdra (servant) and creates unemployment and a "doggish mentality."
