Śrīla Prabhupāda's critique of the modern educational system exposes the fundamental flaw at the heart of contemporary civilization: the complete omission of spiritual knowledge. The Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad, as cited by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, divides knowledge into two categories: aparā-vidyā (material knowledge) and pāra-vidyā (transcendental knowledge). Because modern universities exclusively teach aparā-vidyā, focusing entirely on the temporary physical body and technological advancement, Śrīla Prabhupāda classifies this curriculum as an "animal education." A system that only teaches humanity how to eat, sleep, and secure bodily comforts without answering the questions "Who am I?" and "What happens after death?" is effectively operating in total darkness.

The societal results of this godless educational system are disastrous. Despite massive investments in huge universities, the output is a frustrated, confused, and aimless younger generation, often turning to intoxication or even suicide out of sheer hopelessness. By training students solely in technology rather than philosophy or spiritual science, modern education is geared simply to produce a massive population of śūdras (laborers). Śrīla Prabhupāda bluntly refers to these secular schools and colleges as "slaughterhouses," where the spiritual potential of the human form of life is systematically murdered.

To save human society from complete ruination, the entire educational system must be radically changed. A genuine education must begin in childhood, teaching students their real identity as eternal spirit souls (ātmā) and explaining the exact science of transmigration. It must introduce the principles of varṇāśrama-dharma to properly organize society, and most importantly, it must teach the science of God. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement was explicitly designed to act as this novel, topmost educational system, providing the missing pāra-vidyā necessary to emancipate the conditioned soul and conquer the cycle of birth and death.
