Category:Eligibility of a Devotee of God
Theme Analysis
The eligibility to become a devotee of God is not determined by material qualifications such as caste, creed, nationality, or wealth. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that anyone, regardless of their birth or background, is completely eligible to become a pure Vaiṣṇava and even a spiritual master if they simply learn the science of Kṛṣṇa. This universal accessibility is the supreme mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Even a third-class devotee, whose faith is initially weak, or one who accidentally falls down, remains eligible for spiritual promotion and protection through the gradual cultivation of devotional service.
The actual qualification for entering the kingdom of God begins internally with a sincere eagerness to hear about the Supreme Lord. By constantly engaging in śravaṇa-kīrtana (hearing and chanting), a person is cleansed of all material contamination, particularly the toxic disease of envy. As their faith deepens and they constantly think of the Lord through personal prayers, they become eligible to be elevated to the platform of pure devotion.
An eligible devotee naturally develops divine, saintly qualities. They become profoundly humble, realizing that all material opulence is temporary, and they consider themselves lower than a piece of straw in the street. Furthermore, a saintly person eligible to return back to Godhead is universally compassionate, exhibiting tolerance and equal kindness to both human beings and animals without partiality. Because they harbor no pride, and firmly believe that serving Kṛṣṇa fulfills all other obligations, their eligibility to return home, back to Godhead is absolutely guaranteed.
