Theme Analysis

The interactions between Lord Kṛṣṇa and His devotees are not abstract or impersonal; they are filled with profound, dynamic expressions of love. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that embracing Kṛṣṇa is the ultimate physical and emotional manifestation of spiritual ecstasy, but the nature of this embrace varies according to the specific rasa (transcendental mellow) the devotee shares with the Lord. In the realm of vātsalya-rasa (parental affection), Mother Yaśodā, Rohiṇī, Nanda Mahārāja, and Vasudeva embrace Kṛṣṇa with overwhelming protective love. This affection is so intense that tears continually glide down their cheeks, and the mothers naturally secrete milk. When Devakī and Vasudeva temporarily hesitated to embrace Him out of awe for His supreme majesty, Kṛṣṇa quickly spoke sweet, innocent words to pull them back into the ecstasy of parental love.

In the mellow of sakhya-rasa (friendship), the interactions are spontaneous and equal. The cowherd boys of Vṛndāvana eagerly rush to embrace Kṛṣṇa, holding Him tightly to their chests. Similarly, when Kṛṣṇa meets the Pāṇḍavas, Arjuna and Bhīma embrace Him vigorously as intimate friends of the same age, whereas the younger brothers, Nakula and Sahadeva, bow down and touch His lotus feet out of respect.

The highest and most intense exchanges occur in mādhurya-rasa (conjugal love). The gopīs of Vṛndāvana and the queens of Dvārakā desire to embrace Kṛṣṇa above all else. Because of their profound attachment, they sometimes overcome their natural feminine shyness to embrace Him directly. When physical proximity is impossible, their love is so powerful that they embrace Him within the cores of their hearts through their eyes—a mental embrace that induces a level of ecstasy entirely inaccessible to even the most advanced mystic yogīs. The spiritual purity of these interactions is absolute; as Śrīla Prabhupāda notes, despite the countless descriptions of Kṛṣṇa kissing and embracing His millions of girlfriends, there is no mundane consequence like pregnancy, proving that this love is entirely transcendental and free from material lust.

  • Parental Affection: In vātsalya-rasa, devotees like Mother Yaśodā and Nanda Mahārāja embrace Kṛṣṇa with intense protective love, shedding tears of spontaneous joy.
  • Fraternal Love: In sakhya-rasa, friends like the cowherd boys and Arjuna embrace Kṛṣṇa as an equal, displaying intimate, joyful affection.
  • Conjugal Ecstasy: The gopīs and queens experience the highest bliss in mādhurya-rasa, embracing Kṛṣṇa physically, visually, and mentally with pure, unalloyed devotion.
  • Pure Transcendence: Embracing Kṛṣṇa is entirely free from material contamination or mundane lust, representing the absolute perfection of loving exchange.
