The concept of independence in the material world is an illusion. According to Vedic philosophy, every ounce of power, intelligence, and capability is directly endowed by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that on a cosmic level, the massive planets floating in space do not do so by their own mechanical power; this floating power is explicitly endowed upon them by the Lord. Similarly, dull matter has no inherent creative ability; its capacity to form the cosmic manifestation is endowed by the Supreme Lord's expansion, Saṅkarṣaṇa. Even the first created being, Lord Brahmā, was endowed with perfect knowledge and intelligence to engineer the universe.
On an individual level, the living entities are parts and parcels of the complete whole, endowed with limited potency. Our senses, which we often mistakenly claim as our own, are merely instruments endowed by the Lord. The Supersoul residing within the heart directs our actions and endows every living being—from the greatest demigod to the insignificant ant—with the specific knowledge required to function.
In the realm of spiritual advancement, the Lord acts as the supreme bestower of benedictions. He reciprocates with every soul according to their degree of surrender, endowing them with different rewards. When a devotee approaches the Lord through the authorized paramparā system, they are endowed with original spiritual power. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu declared that the Lord has endowed His holy names with all His transcendental potencies, making spiritual perfection easily accessible. Ultimately, when the Lord is fully satisfied with a devotee's sincere efforts, He endows them with prema (pure love of Godhead) and the eternal shelter of His lotus feet, granting them all spiritual opulence.
