Theme Analysis

The duality of "enjoy or suffer" constitutes the basic experience of the conditioned soul in the material world. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this cycle is driven by karma. The living entity desires, and material nature provides a specific body—a machine—to fulfill those desires. Once the body is accepted, one is forced to undergo the happiness and distress ordained by destiny. However, this enjoyment and suffering are largely mental concoctions. The Supersoul acts as the witness and sanctioner, allowing the soul to exercise its minute free will. The only way to break this cycle is through Kṛṣṇa consciousness. By acting for Kṛṣṇa, one transcends the reactions of work and becomes free from the obligation to enjoy or suffer material consequences.

  • The Mechanism: The body is a machine created by nature to allow the soul to enjoy or suffer according to past karma.
  • Mental Concoction: Material happiness and distress are mental adjustments; the soul is actually aloof.
  • The Witness: The Supersoul observes and sanctions the activities but is not responsible for the suffering; the living entity's desire is the cause.
  • The Way Out: Acting in Kṛṣṇa consciousness neutralizes karma, freeing the devotee from the cycle of reaction.
  • Changing Destiny: While ordinary karma is binding, full surrender to Kṛṣṇa can change one's fate and stop the cycle of birth and death.
