To properly understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one must follow a systematic process. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphatically teaches that the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is not an ordinary book, but the exact literary incarnation of Kṛṣṇa Himself. As such, the twelve cantos of the Bhāgavatam represent the physical form of the Lord. The First and Second Cantos specifically represent the Lord's lotus feet. Therefore, just as one approaches a grand personality by first looking at their feet, a sincere student of spiritual science must begin their study with the First Canto.
A major theme in this category is the strict warning against "jumping" to the Tenth Canto. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that conditioned souls, who are still entrapped by sex indulgence and material desires, often want to bypass the foundational philosophy of the First Canto to hear about the Lord's intimate pastimes. He considers this a dangerous malpractice. The First Canto is crucial because it prepares the ground; it establishes the Absolute Truth, debunks all cheating religious processes, and firmly establishes unmotivated devotional service as the supreme religion. By carefully studying the First Canto, the reader's heart becomes cleansed, granting them the genuine spiritual qualification to eventually understand the esoteric pastimes of the Lord.
