Theme Analysis

The Vedic literature explicitly declares that the Absolute Truth cannot be understood through mental speculation; it must be approached by following the great authorities (mahājanas). Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the formula for spiritual perfection is sādhu-śāstra-guru—the saintly persons, the scriptures, and the spiritual master. A bona fide guru is simply one who strictly follows the sādhu and the śāstra. To achieve Kṛṣṇa consciousness, one must rigorously follow the instructions and daily behavior of pure devotees like Prahlāda Mahārāja, Ambarīṣa Mahārāja, and the Six Gosvāmīs of Vṛndāvana. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda makes a critical distinction between following and imitating. While one should follow the instructions of powerful personalities like Lord Śiva or Lord Jesus Christ, one must never imitate their extraordinary actions (such as drinking poison). Furthermore, in the advanced stages of spontaneous devotional service (rāgānugā-bhakti), a devotee must specifically follow the mood and activities of the eternal residents of Vrajabhūmi (Vṛndāvana). The power of following a pure devotee is so absolute that even an animal, like the dog that followed Śivānanda Sena, can achieve liberation.

  • The Infallible Formula: Spiritual success depends entirely on aligning one's life with sādhu, śāstra, and guru, as the guru's sole qualification is following the pure devotees and scriptures.
  • Following vs. Imitating: A devotee must strictly follow the instructions of great personalities but carefully avoid artificially imitating their impossible, superhuman feats.
  • The Path to Vṛndāvana: To attain the highest perfection of spontaneous love of Godhead, one must internally and practically follow a specific eternal resident of Vrajabhūmi.
  • Universal Mercy: The purifying effect of associating with and following a pure devotee is so powerful that it can liberate anyone, regardless of their social background or even their species.
