Theme Analysis

Human society naturally seeks leadership, but because people lack spiritual education, they blindly follow unauthorized politicians, scientists, and philosophers whom Śrīla Prabhupāda sharply refers to as "silly jackals." The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement presents the ultimate alternative: accepting Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, as the supreme leader. Kṛṣṇa descends to the material world specifically to establish the true principles of religion and to demonstrate, through His own ideal behavior, how humanity should act.

A critical, repeated theme in this category is the absolute necessity of following Kṛṣṇa's instructions without ever attempting to imitate His supreme power. We must follow Kṛṣṇa's direct order in the Bhagavad-gītā to surrender unto Him, and we can follow His example of acting as an ideal householder. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly warns that it is impossible—and highly offensive—for a conditioned soul to imitate Kṛṣṇa's extraordinary pastimes, such as lifting Govardhana Hill or dancing with the gopīs in the rāsa-līlā. Furthermore, following Kṛṣṇa does not require a person to become an intellectual genius; it simply requires becoming a faithful representative (a "peon") who delivers Kṛṣṇa's message without adulteration. By doing so, any ordinary person can become a perfect spiritual master and achieve ultimate liberation.

  • The Supreme Leader: Society must stop following "silly jackals" (flawed mundane leaders) and agree to follow the flawless leadership and instructions of Kṛṣṇa.
  • Following vs. Imitating: We must follow Kṛṣṇa's instructions and His authorized behavior (like respecting brāhmaṇas), but we must never imitate His omnipotent pastimes (like expanding into many forms or the rāsa dance).
  • The Role of the Representative: To be a spiritual master or Kṛṣṇa's representative does not require magic or academic prowess; it simply requires faithfully repeating Kṛṣṇa's words exactly as they are given in the Bhagavad-gītā.
  • The Guarantee of Perfection: Kṛṣṇa is perfect. Therefore, proportionally as one agrees to follow Kṛṣṇa's instructions, they become perfect and are guaranteed return back home, back to Godhead.
