Theme Analysis

The Vedic system of education and social organization relies heavily on the transformative power of personal example. In the Bhagavad-gītā, Lord Kṛṣṇa explains the principle of yad yad ācarati śreṣṭhas tat tad evetaro janaḥ: whatever a great man does, the common people will naturally follow. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that to make tangible spiritual advancement, devotees must carefully study and follow the examples set by the Supreme Lord, the ācāryas, and the mahājanas—such as Prahlāda Mahārāja’s unwavering tolerance, Haridāsa Ṭhākura’s strict chanting, or Rūpa Gosvāmī’s practical detachment. However, he strictly warns that following does not mean superficial or dangerous imitation (such as attempting to mimic Lord Śiva). Furthermore, Śrīla Prabhupāda places a heavy responsibility on the leaders, parents, and senior members of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement to perfectly follow his own tireless example, ensuring they set an unblemished standard that will inspire and protect the entire society.

  • The Principle of Yad Yad Ācarati: The mass of people naturally imitate the behavior of leaders. Therefore, kings, parents, and senior devotees have a profound duty to set a perfect spiritual example for their dependents to follow.
  • Following the Mahājanas: Spiritual success is achieved by replicating the mood and actions of the predecessors. We must learn tolerance from Prahlāda, respectful inquiry from Parīkṣit, and dedication to the holy name from Haridāsa Ṭhākura.
  • Following vs. Imitating: There is a vast difference between following in the footsteps of a great personality and artificially imitating them. We must follow the instructions and the applicable behavior of the ācāryas, but we must never imitate the exclusive, extraordinary pastimes of empowered incarnations like Lord Śiva or Ṛṣabhadeva.
  • The Responsibility of Preachers: Śrīla Prabhupāda tirelessly preached and established the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement single-handedly in his old age. His disciples are expected to follow this exact example of determination, purity, and relentless preaching.
