In the material world, every action—whether considered good or bad—results in a reaction that binds the living entity to the cycle of karma. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the only way to escape this entanglement is to transcend the material modes of nature by becoming free from reaction. This state of akarma, or action without fruitive results, is achieved through the process of devotional service. By surrendering to Kṛṣṇa and acting solely for His satisfaction under the direction of a bona fide spiritual master, a person is relieved of the burden of past sins.
