Theme Analysis

The interaction between the finite desire of the living entity and the infinite sanction of the Supreme Lord is the driving force of the cosmic manifestation. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while the living entity has the free will to desire, the fulfillment of that desire is entirely dependent on the will of Providence. "Man proposes, God disposes." This category explores how Lord Kṛṣṇa, as the Supreme Father, fulfills the desires of everyone—from the demigods and demons to the pure devotees—according to their specific qualifications and surrender. It contrasts the temporary satisfaction of material desires, which leads to further entanglement, with the eternal satisfaction found in having one's desires fulfilled directly by the Supreme Lord.

  • The Supreme Sanctioner: The individual soul is not omnipotent; whether one prays to demigods or strives independently, the result is ultimately awarded by Kṛṣṇa as the Supersoul.
  • The Intelligence of Surrender: Even if one is filled with material desires, the intelligent path is to approach Kṛṣṇa, for He can fulfill desires in a way that ultimately liberates the petitioner (as seen in the history of Dhruva Mahārāja).
  • Reciprocation of Love: Kṛṣṇa is so kind that He fulfills the specific emotional desires of His devotees, even if it means breaking His own promise (as He did for Bhīṣmadeva) or extending the night for the rāsa dance.
  • The Trap of Material Fulfillment: For the non-devotee, the fulfillment of desire is a trap; as one desire is satisfied, another arises, forcing the soul to accept repeated birth and death to chase phantasmagoria.
