Theme Analysis

The glorification of the holy name is the absolute essence of spiritual life in the current age. According to the Vedic scriptures, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is nondifferent from His holy name. Therefore, glorifying the holy name is identical to glorifying the Lord Himself. Because human society is suffering from material contamination and political misunderstanding, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu descended specifically to broadcast the glories of the holy name. This chanting is the only religious practice recommended for the Age of Kali, bringing about the peace, prosperity, and purification so eagerly awaited by the world.

To properly spread these glories, one must be an empowered representative of the Lord. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu exhibited this principle perfectly through Haridāsa Ṭhākura, who chanted three hundred thousand names daily and became the recognized master of the holy name. Unless a preacher receives special power of attorney from Kṛṣṇa, they cannot actually impart the transcendental potency of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra to others.

While the holy name is supremely merciful, a practitioner must strictly avoid the ten offenses to achieve the ultimate result. Two offenses are particularly highlighted in relation to the glories of the holy name. The fifth offense is to consider these glories to be mere exaggerations or to formulate perverted, logical interpretations of them. The holy name's power is absolute and cannot be subjected to mundane argument. The ninth offense is to preach these glories to faithless persons who have no intelligence or interest in the subject matter. While such people should be given the chance to hear the chanting, they should not be prematurely instructed in the deep spiritual significance of the holy name, lest they commit further offenses. Furthermore, to blaspheme the pure devotees who dedicate their lives to broadcasting these glories is considered the most severe offense, completely destroying one's spiritual progress.

  • The Yuga-Dharma: Broadcasting the glories of the holy name is the specific religious principle for the Age of Kali, initiated by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
  • Empowered Preaching: One must be specifically empowered by the Lord, like Haridāsa Ṭhākura, to effectively preach the glories of the holy name.
  • Avoiding Exaggeration: The fifth offense is to consider the scriptural glories of the holy name to be imaginary or exaggerated to induce people to chant.
  • Protecting the Faithless: The ninth offense forbids instructing faithless people about the deep glories of the name, although they should still be allowed to hear the chanting.
