Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category addresses the interplay between the Supreme Lord's absolute control and the minute free will of the living entities, categorized by what God is "allowing." Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that because the living entities are parts and parcels of the Lord, they possess a minute quantity of independence. When a soul desires to imitate the Lord and enjoy the material world, God does not interfere; He allows the soul to enter the cosmic creation and play out their desires, even if those desires lead to a hellish life or the body of a pig. He also allows powerful demons to display their magical feats before vanquishing them. For impersonalists and the killed enemies of the Lord, He allows them to merge into the impersonal brahmajyoti. However, the Lord is extremely protective of His pure devotees. He does not allow them to engage in degrading sense gratification, but He may allow them to enjoy material opulence—like Prahlāda Mahārāja or Bali Mahārāja—because they remain completely unattached. Ultimately, only through pure devotional service is a soul allowed to enter the spiritual planets of Vaikuṇṭha and associate directly with the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

  • The Concession of Free Will: God does not force obedience. If a living entity wants to go to hell or develop the mentality of a pig, the Lord allows him to do so without interference, providing the appropriate material body.
  • Creation as a Playground: The creation and annihilation of the material world are regular actions of the Lord meant specifically to allow the conditioned souls to play out their independent desires.
  • Destination of Impersonalists: Both the out-and-out enemies of the Lord (demons) and the impersonalist philosophers are allowed to enter the spiritual sky, but they are restricted to the impersonal brahmajyoti; they are not allowed into the Vaikuṇṭha planets.
  • Protection from Sense Gratification: While the Lord allows materialists to exploit nature, He does not allow His pure devotees or assistants to be entangled in mundane sense gratification or illicit activities.
  • Entering the Supreme Abode: After many births of frustration, when a soul finally surrenders, they are trained in devotional service and are exclusively allowed to enter the direct, personal association of the Lord.
