Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes that the ultimate perfection of human life is not material success or impersonal liberation, but attaining the personal association of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the living entities are eternal parts and parcels of God. When they fall from His association due to the misuse of their minute independence, they become covered by the illusory energy and suffer in the material world. However, the Lord is the ultimate benefactor and constantly desires to have the souls return to their constitutional position. He is completely self-sufficient and does not need our association, yet like a loving father, He wants us to be happy by participating in His transcendental pastimes. Association with the Lord is prophylactic (antiseptic); even an impure person becomes purified by His touch. To achieve this association, one must engage in pure devotional service, follow the instructions of the Lord (which are identical to Him), and associate with His pure devotees. When a devotee achieves this ultimate goal, they do not merge into the Lord's existence like a drop of water in the ocean, but enter the spiritual sky in their individual spiritual bodies to enjoy eternal, blissful exchanges in one of the five transcendental rasas.

  • The Constitutional Position: Every living entity is eternally a part and parcel of the Supreme Lord. True happiness can only be found by returning to our original, constitutional position in the association of the Lord.
  • The Prophylactic Nature of God: The Lord is completely pure and antiseptic. Just as touching fire makes one warm, associating with the Supreme Lord—through His holy name, instructions, or direct presence—immediately purifies the conditioned soul.
  • Superior to Impersonal Liberation: Merging into the impersonal brahmajyoti is an incomplete realization. The intelligent soul rejects this spiritual suicide and aspires only for the sublime, face-to-face association of the Personality of Godhead in the Vaikuṇṭha planets.
  • Achieving Association Through Service: One cannot force entry into the Lord's association through mystic yoga or mental speculation. The only direct and easiest means to associate with the Godhead is through unalloyed devotional service (bhakti-yoga).
  • Association Through Vāṇī: The Lord is absolute. Therefore, one does not need His physical presence (vapuḥ) to associate with Him; following His instructions (vāṇī) and chanting His holy names is direct association.
  • The Danger of Falling Down: Because the living entities are the marginal potency (taṭastha-śakti), they always possess a minute degree of independence. Misusing this independence is the sole cause of falling from the Lord's association into the material world.
