The primary function of this energy is to act as a deluding force, offering a dream-like environment for conditioned souls who wish to artificially lord over nature and imitate God. It provides them with physical bodies composed of gross and subtle elements and subjects them to the stringent laws of birth, death, and karma. While the living entities become completely entangled and bewildered by this energy, the Supreme Lord always remains its master (guṇa-ātmā), completely untouched and unaffected by material modes. Ultimately, the external energy acts as a harsh but necessary rectifying agent. Through the practice of unalloyed devotional service (bhakti-yoga), a sincere soul can conquer this insurmountable illusion (mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te) and be transferred to the Lord's superior, internal energy.

- The whole manifestation is the Lord Himself by diffusion of His different energies only, namely the internal, external and marginal, just as the sunlight is the manifestation of the energy of the sun planet
- The whole material creation is conducted by the three purusas in successive stages under the external energy of the Lord, and thus material nature is controlled by Him
- The word anujnata, indicating that the whole sequence of events was arranged by the Lord, is significant. These particular pastimes of the Lord are not a manifestation of His external energy, or material nature
- The word bhuyah indicates again and again, that is to say the process of creation, maintenance and annihilation is going on perpetually by the external energy of the Lord

- This gross misconception of life is so strong that a person suffers continually, life after life, under the external energy of the Lord
- This material creation, having been created by the external energy of the Lord, is like an imaginary town visualized on a hill or in a forest
- This statement definitely confirms that the particular energy known as bahir-anga-maya, or the external energy, although of flickering nature, is the energy of the Supreme Lord, and as such it cannot be false
- Those who are actually advanced approach Lord Visnu, their ultimate goal. Such people are never captivated by Lord Visnu’s external energy, the material world

- Those who are in control of the external energy of the Lord, or in other words those who are in the material world, must first of all know how the external energy of the Lord is working under the direction of the Supreme Personality

- Vyasadeva fixed his mind, perfectly engaging it by linking it in devotional service (bhakti-yoga) without any tinge of materialism, and thus he saw the Absolute Personality of Godhead along with His external energy, which was under full control
- Vyasadeva saw His (God's) different energies, namely the internal energy, the marginal energy and the external energy

- We are a composition of the external and internal energies of God. The gross external energy is this gross material body, and the subtle external energy is the mind, ego and intelligence
- We are covered by this gross body made up of earth, water, fire, air and ether, which is the gross external energy of God, or Krsna, and the mind, ego and intelligence, which are subtle. Thus we are covered
- We are making progress. We are bringing stones and irons on head and putting together, and it is progress. We are very happy. - This is going on. This is called bahir-artha-maninah (SB 7.5.31). They are enamored by the external energy of the PG

- When the creation is manifest, it is maintained by Him (the Lord); indeed, whatever manifestation we see is but a transformation of His external energy
- When the living entity falls down, he goes into the material world, which was created by the external energy of the Lord. This external energy is described herein (SB 4.28.55) as some woman, or prakrti

- When the Supreme Personality of Godhead incarnates, He does not need any help from the external energy, for He appears as He is by His own potency. The spiritual potency is also called maya
