Category:God's Keeping

Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category reveals the multifaceted ways the Supreme Personality of Godhead maintains, protects, and perfectly orchestrates both the material creation and the lives of His devotees. Although the Lord expands Himself to create the cosmic manifestation, He miraculously keeps His original form and identity completely aloof from material contamination. At the universal level, it is the Lord's supreme energy that keeps the planets in orbit and, in His boar incarnation, literally keeps the earth afloat. On a deeply personal level, God's keeping demonstrates His supreme affection. He acts as the Paramātmā, keeping company with the fallen living entities through millions of lifetimes, waiting for them to turn back to Him. For His pure devotees, the Lord goes to extraordinary lengths; He will even break His own promises simply to keep the promise of His devotee intact, as He did for Bhīṣmadeva. Ultimately, the highest perfection of life is to be kept under the protective shade of the Lord's lotus feet, completely dependent on His divine maintenance.

  • Keeping Aloof from Matter: Although the Supreme Lord's energy constitutes the entire cosmic creation, He never becomes entangled. He keeps His supreme identity and remains completely aloof from material tribulations.
  • Keeping the Devotee's Promise: The Lord is perfectly absolute, yet He willingly subordinates Himself to the love of His pure devotees. He is so affectionate that He will famously break His own vow just to keep a vow made by His servant.
  • Keeping the Cosmos Sustained: The so-called laws of physics, like magnetism, are actually the spiritual energy of the Lord (Śeṣa Nāga) keeping the planetary globes in balance. As Lord Varāha, He directly keeps the earth aloft on His tusks.
  • Keeping Company as the Supersoul: God never abandons the living entities. Even when they fall into the darkest material conditions, He keeps company with them as the Paramātmā, silently guiding them back to Godhead.
  • Keeping the Devotee Secure: A pure devotee knows that the Lord will always keep them protected and maintained. Their only prayer is to be kept eternally in the Lord's service, rejecting all other forms of liberation.
