Category:God's Marginal Energy

Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes the exact constitutional position of the living entities within the cosmic hierarchy. The Supreme Personality of Godhead possesses unlimited potencies, which are primarily categorized into three groups: the internal (spiritual) energy, the external (material) energy, and the marginal energy. The living entities (jīvas) constitute this marginal energy, known technically as taṭasthā-śakti. Because they are infinitesimal sparks of the supreme energetic, they share the Lord's spiritual nature. However, because of their marginal position, they have the inherent independence to choose their association. They can either take shelter of the internal spiritual energy and engage in the blissful loving service of the Lord, or they can become entrapped by the external material energy (māyā) due to a false desire to lord over material nature. The ultimate goal of spiritual life, as taught by the Vedic literatures, is for the marginal energy to recognize its subordinate position, transfer its association from the material to the spiritual energy, and revive its original, pure consciousness.

  • The Three Principal Energies: God is omnipotent and possesses multi-energies, which are primarily grouped into three main divisions: the superior internal energy, the inferior external energy, and the intermediate marginal energy.
  • The Identity of the Living Being: The living entities are not God, nor are they a product of dead matter. They are separated, infinitesimal expansions of the Lord, specifically designated as His marginal energy.
  • The Liberty of Choice: The term marginal (taṭastha) indicates that the living entity is situated on the boundary between the spiritual and material realms. He is endowed with the free will to associate with either the superior or the inferior energy.
  • Entrapment by Material Nature: When the living entity misuses his minute independence and desires to become the master rather than the servant, he falls under the control of the external energy and becomes entangled in the bodily concept of life.
  • The Path of Liberation: True yoga and devotion mean understanding one's constitutional identity as the marginal energy of the Supreme Lord and consciously choosing to take shelter of the internal energy through pure devotional service.
