Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the exalted position of the Lord's pure devotees who serve Him in the parental rasa. Although the Supreme Personality of Godhead is unborn and has no material parents, He mercifully accepts the role of a child for His most advanced devotees, such as Devakī, Yaśodā, Aditi, and Devahūti. Whether playfully interacting as a child or imparting the highest transcendental knowledge as Lord Kapila did for His mother, the Lord perfectly reciprocates with their pure affection. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that rendering service in this parental mood spiritualizes one's entire existence. Kṛṣṇa is so unconditionally merciful that He even elevated the demoness Pūtanā to the position of His mother, simply because she offered Him her breast milk.

  • The Eagerness for Transcendental Knowledge: Even though she was His mother, Devahūti humbly submitted herself as a student before Lord Kapila, demonstrating the proper eagerness to receive kṛṣṇa-kathā.
  • The Supreme Status of the Eternal Mothers: Only the most advanced, pure devotees are awarded the unparalleled benediction of acting as the eternal mothers of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • Spiritualizing the Mind through Affection: Constantly meditating on the Lord's intimate associates, especially His parents, completely spiritualizes the material mind and body of the devotee.
  • The Absolute Reciprocation of Kṛṣṇa: The Lord perfectly reciprocates with the maternal affection of His devotees, and out of His boundless mercy, He even awarded the position of a mother to Pūtanā.
  • The Gift of Supreme Knowledge: By imparting the ancient Sāṅkhya philosophy to His mother, Lord Kapila not only delivered her from material bondage but also distributed this supreme knowledge to the entire world.
