Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the absolute necessity of following God's orders. True religion (dharma) is not a fabricated, sentimental faith, but the strict, scientific execution of the laws and orders of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Everything in the cosmos—from the rotation of the sun to the administrative duties of Lord Brahmā and the demigods—operates flawlessly under the Lord's supreme command. The conditioned souls in the material world are essentially criminals because they have rebelled against these orders. Conversely, the pure devotees, such as Arjuna and Hanumān, have no independent desire; their only mission, whether it involves peaceful preaching or fighting on a battlefield, is to faithfully execute God's orders.

  • The Definition of True Religion: Genuine religion, or dharma, simply means understanding the Supreme Personality of Godhead and strictly abiding by His orders and laws.
  • The Cosmic Obedience: The entire universe, including powerful planetary controllers like the sun-god and Lord Brahmā, operates strictly under the order of the Supreme Lord.
  • The Perfection of the Devotee: A pure devotee acts as a faithful servant with no independent desires, executing the Lord's orders in all circumstances, even if it requires apparent violence.
  • The Authority of the Spiritual Master: To properly understand and execute the orders of Kṛṣṇa, one must receive them through the bona fide disciplic succession and an authorized spiritual master.
  • The Criminality of Conditioned Souls: Those who misuse their independence and refuse to obey the orders of the Supreme Lord are considered criminals trapped in the material world.
