Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the highly exalted transcendental mellow of vātsalya-rasa, where a pure devotee loves the Supreme Personality of Godhead as their own child. Although God is the original father of everyone and inherently has no parents, by His inconceivable spiritual potency, He joyfully accepts pure devotees like Nanda Mahārāja, Yaśodāmayī, Vasudeva, and Devakī as His parents. In this intimate relationship, the devotee considers themselves the maintainer of the supreme maintainer and may even lovingly chastise the Lord. The Supreme Lord relishes this spontaneous parental affection, along with its loving reproaches, far more than the formal, awe-filled prayers offered by Vedic scholars.

  • The Supreme Lord's Eternal Associates: The parents of the Lord are eternally liberated souls (nitya-siddhas) who descend with Him to participate in His transcendental pastimes, serving Him purely in the mellow of vātsalya-rasa.
  • The Intimate Exchange of Parental Affection: In parental love, the awe and reverence of God's majesty are entirely forgotten. The devotee naturally assumes the role of the supreme maintainer, and the Lord happily places Himself under their loving control and chastisement.
  • The Unparalleled Love of Kṛṣṇa's Parents: Exalted devotees like Vasudeva, Devakī, Nanda Mahārāja, and mother Yaśodā exhibited the absolute pinnacle of parental affection, constantly feeling extreme anxiety for Kṛṣṇa's safety and well-being.
  • The Lord's Reciprocation with His Parents: Just as His parents offer Him unconditional love, the Supreme Personality of Godhead perfectly reciprocates. He begs their pardon, protects them, and automatically awards them all mystic opulences simply by virtue of their intimate relationship with Him.
