Category:God Favors His Devotees
Theme Analysis
The Supreme Personality of Godhead is perfectly neutral, acting as the equal father and Supersoul of all living entities. However, the Vedic literatures declare that this universal equality is wonderfully superseded by His natural affection for His surrendered servants. Because the Lord is bhakta-vatsala, He naturally favors His devotees. This partiality is not a flaw or a material disqualification; rather, it is the highest expression of transcendental love, functioning exactly like a father who naturally bestows special care upon an obedient, loving child.
To favor His devotees, the Supreme Lord goes to extraordinary lengths. Although He possesses an eternal, spiritual form (sac-cid-ananda-vigraha), He willingly descends into the material world in innumerable incarnations simply because His pure devotees are constantly anxious to see Him. For instance, the Lord accepted the form of a fish (Matsya) specifically to favor the great devotee Satyavrata. This proves that God's actions are always motivated by His desire to protect, appease, and delight His surrendered souls.
The Lord's favor also manifests intimately within the heart. To ensure that His devotees never fall into the darkness of illusion, the Lord favors them by endowing them with perfect intelligence. He directs the pure devotee from within, illuminating their path so that they can successfully escape the entanglement of material existence and attain His eternal kingdom.
Perhaps the most profound and difficult-to-understand favor is the Lord's method of dealing with a devotee's material attachments. If a sincere devotee desires material enjoyment, the Lord recognizes that such opulence is a stumbling block to spiritual advancement. Therefore, He shows His special favor by forcibly taking away the devotee's material possessions. Just as He favored Bali Maharaja by allowing him to be deprived of everything by Sukracarya's curse, the Lord snatches away material assets to ensure the devotee relies solely on Him, thereby securing their ultimate spiritual perfection.
- Natural Affection: Although God is equal to everyone, He naturally favors His pure devotees out of reciprocal, transcendental love.
- Incarnating for the Devotee: The Lord accepts innumerable forms and descends into the material world specifically to favor and delight His devotees.
- Internal Enlightenment: The Lord favors His devotees by acting from within the heart, providing the exact intelligence needed to attain ultimate liberation.
- The Supreme Favor: The Lord's greatest, though seemingly harsh, favor is forcibly removing a devotee's material opulence to save them from illusion and ensure their spiritual success.
