Theme Analysis

A profound mystery of Vedic philosophy is why the Supreme Personality of Godhead created a world filled with suffering. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the material creation is not a cruel act, but an expression of the Lord's extreme mercy. Because the conditioned souls misused their minute independence and desired to enjoy separately from Kṛṣṇa, the Lord created this temporary cosmic manifestation to give them a chance to act out those desires. The material world is a facility where souls can take on various bodies—from demigods to ants—and attempt to lord it over material nature.

However, Kṛṣṇa does not simply abandon the living entities to their illusions. The simultaneous and primary purpose of the material creation is to give the fallen souls a chance to become frustrated with their false enjoyment and return back home, back to Godhead. To facilitate this, the Lord sits within everyone's heart as the Supersoul (Paramātmā), giving constant good counsel. Furthermore, He periodically descends as an incarnation, compiles the revealed scriptures, and sends His pure devotees to preach the saṅkīrtana movement. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the human form of life is the specific juncture where the soul has the intelligence to take advantage of this ultimate chance. Even if a devotee fails to perfect their spiritual life in one birth, Kṛṣṇa mercifully gives them another chance by allowing them to take birth in a pious or aristocratic family to continue their progress.

  • The Facility for False Enjoyment: The material world is created specifically to give the rebellious souls a chance to try and enjoy separately from God, fulfilling their desires to the fullest extent.
  • The Ultimate Rescue Mission: While allowing the souls to act out their desires, Kṛṣṇa's true intention is to give them a chance to realize the futility of material life and return to the spiritual world.
  • The Role of the Supersoul: Kṛṣṇa sits within the heart as a witness, noting all desires, but always waiting for the opportunity to give the soul the good counsel needed to surrender.
  • The Rarity of Human Life: The human form of life is a rare and specific chance to understand one's true constitutional position. Wasting this chance means slipping back into the cycle of birth and death.
