Theme Analysis

The pursuit of happiness is the universal driving force behind all living entities. However, the Vedic literatures explain that true happiness cannot be found within the temporary material energy. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the ultimate reservoir of all pleasure. Because the spirit soul is an eternal part and parcel of God, it can only experience genuine bliss when it associates with Him and engages in its constitutional loving relationship, or rasa. The Lord is perpetually happy, and simply by cooperating with Him, the conditioned soul immediately partakes in that boundless spiritual joy.

Although the Lord is the supreme controller, He respects the minute independence of the living entities. We have the free will to choose our master: we can surrender to the dictation of the material energy and suffer, or we can surrender to the Lord and be happy. God sits within the heart of everyone as the Supersoul, providing perfect direction. The highest wisdom, therefore, is to abide by His commandments and take His direction, which guarantees liberation and everlasting peace.

This happiness is not achieved by artificially halting our daily activities. Rather, it is achieved by purifying them through bhakti. When we divert our service from our temporary material senses to the Supreme Lord—dovetailing our work and engaging our wealth in His service—we unlock the door to true satisfaction. As pure devotional service matures, the devotee is plunged into an ocean of transcendental ecstasy. Great souls like Prahlada Maharaja and Narada Muni have described how the direct perception of the Lord produces overwhelming physical and emotional symptoms of ecstatic happiness, such as trembling and shedding tears of joy.

  • The Reservoir of Pleasure: The Supreme Lord is perpetually happy, and the spirit soul can only find true bliss in His association.
  • The Power of Choice: We have the freedom to surrender to the material energy or to God; surrendering to the Lord's commandments is the only path to happiness.
  • Purifying Activities: Happiness is not found in inactivity, but in dovetailing one's actions, wealth, and service for the pleasure of the Lord.
  • Transcendental Ecstasy: Pure devotional service culminates in an ocean of spiritual ecstasy, manifesting physical symptoms of joy, such as tears of love.
