The material world is characterized by constant anxiety, suffering, and the repetition of birth and death. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, the only definitive shelter from these miseries is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. His appearances and activities are specifically meant to relieve the living entities from the heavy burdens of ignorance, illusion, and lamentation.

To make this relief accessible to the deeply conditioned souls, the Lord provides practical spiritual processes. Simply by taking shelter of the Lord's lotus feet, reciting His mysterious appearances, or beholding His face during ārātrika, a devotee is relieved of massive accumulations of sinful reactions. In this present, degraded age of Kali-yuga, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu descended specifically to give immediate relief to the rotting, conditioned souls by freely distributing the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra.
