The philosophical essence of this category establishes the supreme position and function of Lord Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, the second of the three puruṣa-avatāras. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when Mahā-Viṣṇu lies in the Causal Ocean, innumerable universes emanate from His breathing. To maintain and further develop these individual universes, Mahā-Viṣṇu expands and enters into each one of them as Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. He fills half the universe with the water of His own perspiration and lies down upon the serpent bed of Śeṣa Nāga. From His abdomen sprouts a magnificent lotus flower, which becomes the birthplace of Lord Brahmā, the master engineer who subsequently creates all the planetary systems and varieties of living entities. Despite being situated within the material universe and acting as its ultimate sustainer, Lord Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu remains completely transcendental and untouched by the modes of material nature. At the time of cosmic dissolution, the entire universe and all its living entities merge back into His supreme belly.
