Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes the absolute singularity of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is eternally one without a second (advaita). Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that there is no one equal to or greater than the Lord. The acceptance of multiple supreme gods is a pantheistic illusion rejected by the Vedic literatures. However, although the Lord is singular, out of His own sweet will, He expands Himself into innumerable forms, energies, and living entities (jīvas) to enjoy transcendental pastimes. By His inconceivable potency, this one Absolute Truth is simultaneously realized in three features: the impersonal Brahman, the localized Paramātmā, and the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Bhagavān. Thus, the supreme singularity of God perfectly accommodates the infinite diversity of the spiritual and material creations.

  • The Absolute Supreme: The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the singular source of all existence. Because no one is equal to or greater than Him, He is eternally one without a second.
  • Three Features of One Truth: The one Absolute Truth is realized from different angles of vision as the impersonal Brahman effulgence, the localized Paramātmā within the heart, and the original Supreme Person, Bhagavān.
  • Expansions and Energies: God is one without a second, yet like a fire expanding its heat and light, He diffuses His diverse energies to create and maintain the material and spiritual worlds for His transcendental pleasure.
  • The Subordinate Living Entities: The ordinary living entities are innumerable, but the Supreme Lord is singular. He eternally maintains all the minute souls, who are differentiated parts and parcels of the one Absolute Truth.
