Category:God Is The Maintainer

Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Viṣṇu or Kṛṣṇa, is the ultimate maintainer (bhūta-bhṛt) of the entire cosmic manifestation and all living entities within it. Relying on the Vedic injunction eko bahūnāṁ yo vidadhāti kāmān, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while there are countless living entities, there is only one Supreme Being who supplies their necessities. The Lord maintains the universe in His various expansions, particularly as Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu (the Paramātmā). Although He sustains everything, He remains completely aloof and transcendental to the material modes. Recognizing God as the supreme maintainer naturally cures the conditioned soul of the illusion of false independence, leading an intelligent person to surrender unto Him in devotional service.

  • The Supreme Bhūta-bhṛt: The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the singular, original maintainer of the plural, countless living entities. Without His sanction and provision, no living entity can survive.
  • The Role of Viṣṇu: Within the cosmic administration, Lord Brahmā creates and Lord Śiva destroys, but Lord Viṣṇu is the maintainer. This function of maintaining the universe is considered the most glorious, as it directly reflects the Lord's supreme compassion.
  • The Transcendent Sustainer: Although the Lord permeates the universe as the Supersoul and maintains all bodies, minds, and senses, He is never entangled or affected by the material manifestation.
  • The Duty of the Maintained: Because God is the predominator and maintainer, the constitutional position of the living entity is to be predominated and maintained. True self-realization means gratefully engaging in the loving service of the supreme maintainer.
