Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the Supreme Being, the absolute and foremost living entity. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that even a standard dictionary defines God as the "Supreme Being," meaning the one who is great, greater, or the greatest of all other beings. While both the Lord and the minute souls are living beings, their positions are eternally distinct: God is the supreme, unlimited maintainer, and the individual souls are the subordinate, limited maintained. Recognizing this fundamental difference is the basis of true spiritual knowledge and religion (dharma). True dharma is not a manufactured system of beliefs; it is simply the direct order of the Supreme Being. By acknowledging the Lord's absolute supremacy and engaging in His loving service, the conditioned soul abandons false material independence and attains genuine liberation.

  • The Chief Living Entity: God is not an abstract concept or a dead stone; He is a living person. He is the Supreme Being, the chief among all other living entities (nityo nityānāṁ cetanaś cetanānām).
  • The Maintainer and the Maintained: While individual souls and the Supreme Lord are both living beings, the Supreme Being is the unlimited maintainer of millions of trillions of subordinate living entities.
  • The Foundation of Dharma: True religion (dharma) cannot be manufactured by human beings. It consists solely of the laws and orders given by the Supreme Being.
  • The Definition of Supremacy: Being supreme means possessing all opulences in full—unlimited wealth, strength, fame, beauty, knowledge, and renunciation. No one is equal to or greater than the Supreme Being.
