Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Absolute Truth is not a static void; He is full of variegated pastimes. Sometimes He descends personally, and sometimes He sends His representative. Sometimes He assumes fierce forms to annihilate demons, and sometimes He plays as an innocent child in Vṛndāvana, stealing butter or playfully fighting with His friends. His mercy is also exhibited in diverse ways: sometimes He showers a devotee with opulence, and sometimes He forcibly strips away all material possessions or arranges an unfortunate family life to foster complete dependence on Him. The Lord also sometimes communicates through dreams or allows Himself to be defeated by the love of His devotee. Through all these actions, whether harsh or tender, the Lord's ultimate motivation is always the spiritual welfare of the living entities.
- Diverse Descents: The Lord is not restricted in how He appears. Sometimes He incarnates personally (as Lord Kṛṣṇa or Nṛsiṁhadeva), sometimes as a śaktyāveśa-avatāra (like Lord Buddha), and sometimes He sends His bona fide representatives to reclaim the conditioned souls.
- The Paradox of Mercy: The Lord's mercy can appear contradictory. Sometimes He offers benedictions to neophyte devotees, and sometimes He shows special favor by forcibly taking away a devotee's material attachments, as He did with Bali Mahārāja.

- To protect His devotees, the Lord sometimes has to kill their enemies. For example, to protect Prahlada Maharaja, the Lord had to kill his enemy Hiranyakasipu, although Hiranyakasipu attained salvation because of being killed by the Lord

- When He (The Lord) desires to fight with someone, He has to find an enemy, but in the Vaikuntha world there is no enemy. Therefore He sometimes comes to the material world as an incarnation in order to manifest His fighting spirit
- When His incarnation is present on this planet or in this universe, the Lord kills the demons & protects His devotees simultaneously. Sometimes Visnu appears in His person as Lord Krsna or Lord Rama. All of these appearances are mentioned in the sastras
- When Krsna was playing in so many ways, sometimes it appeared that He caused distress to the gopis, but actually such dealings were full of transcendental bliss
