Theme Analysis

The material creation begins with the Supreme Personality of Godhead expanding Himself as the first puruṣa incarnation, known as Mahā-Viṣṇu or Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. This gigantic form of the Lord lies down in the mystic slumber of yoga-nidrā upon the waters of the Causal Ocean, also called the Kāraṇa Ocean. The Causal Ocean itself is a spiritual manifestation, situated far away from the material energy (māyā), which never even touches its waters. From this position, the Lord simply glances over the material nature to initiate the cosmic manifestation.

From the breathing of Mahā-Viṣṇu, innumerable universes (brahmāṇḍas) are generated like seeds. When He exhales, the universes come out from the pores of His body, and when He inhales, they are all drawn back within Him, resulting in universal annihilation. Although the entire cosmic manifestation is essentially a product of the Lord's dreaming condition in the mahat-tattva, it acts as a factual reality for the conditioned souls who inhabit it.

After these universes float upon the Causal Ocean for thousands of eons in a lifeless state, Mahā-Viṣṇu expands further as Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu and enters into each individual universal egg to fully animate it. From there, the secondary creation by Lord Brahmā takes place. Because the Causal Ocean is purely transcendental, its waters possess immense purifying power. For example, when Lord Vāmana pierced the covering of the universe, drops of this Kāraṇa water entered the material sky and became known as the sacred Ganges River. Ultimately, the Lord, His eternal associates, and the spiritual kingdom beyond the Causal Ocean remain completely unaffected by the temporary creation and dissolution of the material worlds.

  • The First Puruṣa: The Supreme Lord expands as Mahā-Viṣṇu (Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu), who lies on the Causal Ocean to initiate the material creation.
  • The Cosmic Breath: Innumerable universes are generated from Mahā-Viṣṇu's exhalation and are destroyed during His inhalation.
  • Entering the Universes: After the lifeless universes float on the ocean, the Lord expands as Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu to enter and animate each one.
  • Transcendental Nature: The Causal Ocean is entirely spiritual; it is untouched by māyā, and its waters purify the universe as the river Ganges.
