The Vedic literatures reveal that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not a static, actionless void, but a dynamic, ever-youthful person who engages in eternal, blissful pastimes. Among all His associates, the gopīs of Vṛndāvana represent the absolute pinnacle of unalloyed devotion. The Lord Himself declares that these young cowherd girls are dearer to Him than Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva, or even the goddess of fortune. This is because the gopīs have completely dedicated their hearts and souls to Kṛṣṇa, possessing absolutely no desire other than His satisfaction. Within this exalted group, Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī is the chief, as she perfectly expresses the highest possible ecstasy of transcendental love.
Because the Lord's pastimes with the gopīs outwardly resemble mundane romance, they are frequently misunderstood by mundane scholars and word-wranglers. However, the pure love of the gopīs, functioning in the paramour relationship known as parakīya-rasa, is a completely spiritual display of the Lord's internal potency. What appears as lust to the conditioned soul is actually the zenith of selflessness, as the gopīs never seek personal enjoyment but strive only to please the senses of Kṛṣṇa. Their love is so flawless and pristine that even the most elevated and highly learned devotees, like Śrī Uddhava, eagerly pray to taste it.
Understanding the transcendental nature of God and the gopīs is the ultimate goal of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu strictly declared that the method of worship exhibited by the gopīs is the highest perfection of spiritual life. By following in the footsteps of the six Gosvāmīs of Vṛndāvana, who were constantly absorbed in the mood of the gopīs, a sincere practitioner can transcend all material designations. Ultimately, the perfection of existence is to fix the mind entirely upon Kṛṣṇa, serving Him with the same unmotivated, spontaneous affection demonstrated by the eternal damsels of Vrajabhūmi.
