The philosophical essence of this category establishes the reasons and circumstances surrounding the Supreme Personality of Godhead's descent to the planet earth. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord is not restricted to the spiritual sky; out of His causeless mercy, He appears on earth to protect His pure devotees, annihilate demonic forces, and reestablish the principles of religion. When the Lord descends, He does not come alone. He is accompanied by His eternal associates, and various demigods take birth in specific dynasties, such as the Yadu family, to assist in His mission. During His earthly pastimes, the Lord performs wonderful acts, such as Lord Varāha lifting the drowned earth from the Garbhodaka Ocean, or Lord Rāmacandra exhibiting the ideal behavior of a human being. Although the Lord may appear to be an ordinary man by taking birth and accepting a father, this is simply a bewilderment for those with a poor fund of knowledge.
