Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Sarasvatī, the goddess of learning and wife of Lord Brahmā, is the presiding deity of education, speech, and music. While ordinary men worship her to become great scholars, this material knowledge is inherently temporary and finishes at the time of death. True knowledge is knowing the Absolute Truth, and as a pure devotee and servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, mother Sarasvatī is completely subordinate to Lord Kṛṣṇa and Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. One of her most remarkable pastimes is how she subtly alters the speech of demons and bewildered poets; when they attempt to blaspheme or write improperly about the Lord, she tactfully manipulates their words to offer profound prayers to her master. By her grace, even arrogant champions of learning like Keśava Kāśmīrī are humbled and directed to surrender to the Supreme Lord.

  • The Presiding Deity of Education: Mother Sarasvatī is the goddess of learning, speech, and music, adorned with vast Vedic knowledge and worshipped by those seeking mundane scholarship.
  • Temporary Material Knowledge: Acquiring great scholarship through her favor is ultimately temporary, as all such material education is entirely finished at the time of death.
  • Subordinate to the Supreme: Although she empowers great scholars, she is a humble servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and personally orders her followers to submit to Him.
  • Tactful Prayers: When demons or ignorant poets attempt to blaspheme or write improperly about the Lord, she expertly manipulates their words to form beautiful, hidden prayers.
  • The Ultimate Purpose of Speech: The perfection of learning and the true blessing of Sarasvatī is to properly glorify the Supreme Lord, which is why she is invoked before reciting the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.
