Theme Analysis

In the Vedic social system, a good wife is considered a great fortune and a vital asset for a man's peaceful life. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a woman is the "energy" of the man; if she is faithful, chaste, and cooperative, she provides the inspiration and domestic stability required for her husband to execute his duties effectively. While materialists seek a good wife primarily for sense gratification and social prestige, for a devotee, a good wife is a partner in spiritual life who assists in Deity worship and preaching. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda also elevates the vision to the platform of renunciation, noting that a pure devotee does not ask God for a good wife, and great souls like Lord Caitanya renounced even excellent wives for the sake of the mission.

  • A Source of Fortunate Energy: A good wife energizes her husband. Historically, great men are often backed by a supportive mother or wife.
  • The Spiritual Partner: In Kṛṣṇa consciousness, a good wife is one who helps her husband in preaching and service. The combination of a sincere husband and a good wife creates "double strength" for serving the Lord.
  • Home or Forest: Citing Cāṇakya Paṇḍita, Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that a home is truly a home only if there is a good mother and a good wife; otherwise, it is as good as a forest.
  • Detachment: Despite the value of a good wife, one must not become attached. Pure devotees do not pray for material assets like a good wife, and ultimately, one must be prepared to renounce family attachment for Kṛṣṇa.
