Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the concept of good will operates on multiple spiritual levels. First, the Supreme Personality of Godhead acts out of His own supreme good will. He is never forced by the laws of material nature; rather, the material energy works under His direction. When He descends to the material world, it is entirely by His causeless mercy and free will, much like a governor visiting a prison house. Second, the living entity must exercise their own individual good will. True devotional service, or bhakti, is not forced by karma but relies on the soul's voluntary choice to surrender to Kṛṣṇa. By consciously sacrificing personal desires and dedicating everything to the good will of the Supreme Lord, a conditioned soul achieves the transcendental position. Finally, good will must be the foundation of all interactions within the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. From the spiritual master correcting his disciples, to devotees cooperating together, the entire mission is an international endeavor to establish spiritual harmony and genuine good will among humanity.

  • The Supreme Independence: Kṛṣṇa is never subject to material laws; His appearances, actions, and the execution of cosmic nature are all manifestations of His independent good will.
  • The Path of Dependence: Real peace and protection are found only when the living entity stops trying to enjoy independently and becomes completely dependent on the good will of the Supreme Lord.
  • Voluntary Surrender: Devotional service cannot be forced. It is activated when a person uses their minute independence and good will to accept Kṛṣṇa's instruction to surrender.
  • The Foundation of Service: The entire Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is based on the voluntary good will of its members, requiring cooperation, purity, and a genuine desire to serve others.
  • Divine Mercy: The seed of devotion is planted in the heart of a conditioned soul exclusively through the combined good will of the bona fide spiritual master and Kṛṣṇa.
