Theme Analysis

The ultimate success of human life is entirely dependent on one's state of consciousness at the moment of passing away. Śrīla Prabhupāda constantly reminded his disciples that the time of death is the final, uncompromising examination of their spiritual advancement. To pass this test, he explained exactly how a devotee must prepare throughout their life. He taught that preparation for death does not mean fearful anticipation, but rather a vigorous, daily application of Kṛṣṇa consciousness—purifying one's desires, diminishing offenses, strictly following the instructions of the spiritual master, and engaging in steady, cooperative service. By cultivating this intense eagerness to serve the Lord every single day, a disciple ensures that remembering Kṛṣṇa at the time of death becomes a natural, guaranteed reality.

  • The Final Examination: A devotee's greatness is ultimately tested at the moment of death. The absolute measure of success is how well one has practiced their daily bhajana and sādhana, and whether they can remember Kṛṣṇa when the body is failing.
  • Purifying the Consciousness: Preparation requires a complete change in consciousness. Instead of desiring material power or falsely attempting to become God, a devotee must purify their heart, transforming their mundane attachments into a pure, desireless eagerness to satisfy Kṛṣṇa.
  • Developing Seriousness and Diminishing Offenses: Fickle practice will not sustain a devotee during the final test. One must become deeply serious, studying the Nectar of Devotion to gradually diminish all offenses while experiencing the profound peace and protection of the Lord.
  • Assimilating the Philosophy: Remembering Kṛṣṇa requires a mind deeply saturated with His philosophy. Devotees must not divert from the guru's instructions; they must study the śāstra carefully, assimilate the teachings, and constantly think of Kṛṣṇa so they can effectively speak and write about Him.
  • Steady Service and Progress: The ultimate preparation is uninterrupted, joint service. By cooperating with godbrothers, avoiding philosophical discrepancies, and constantly advancing their eagerness to serve without material hindrance, disciples ensure their consciousness remains permanently fixed on the spiritual platform.
