Theme Analysis

Kṛṣṇa is never alone. Just as a king is understood to be present with his ministers, secretaries, and military commanders, Kṛṣṇa is always accompanied by His transcendental entourage. This entourage is not material; it consists of liberated souls and the Lord's own internal potency, ānanda-cinmaya-rasa. There is no difference between Kṛṣṇa and His name, qualities, form, pastimes, and entourage because the Absolute Truth is absolute in all His manifestations. When Kṛṣṇa descends to the material world, His entire entourage and His spiritual abode, Vṛndāvana, descend with Him to attract the conditioned souls.

  • The Principle of the Absolute: In the spiritual world, there is no differentiation between the Lord and His entourage. They are of the same spiritual potency and are identical to the Lord in their absolute nature.
  • The Composition of the Entourage: The entourage includes Kṛṣṇa's parents, friends, servants, and the gopīs. Even the land of Vṛndāvana and the plant Tulasī are considered part of Kṛṣṇa's entourage and are thus worshipable.
  • Purpose of the Entourage's Descent: Kṛṣṇa appears with His personal entourage to exhibit transcendental relationships and bestow mercy. This attracts conditioned souls back to the spiritual world.
  • Requirement for Understanding: One cannot understand the nature of Kṛṣṇa's entourage with blunt material senses. It requires the purification of the senses through the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra and the mercy of the Lord.
