Theme Analysis

The philosophy of Krsna consciousness places immense importance on the activity of the tongue, identifying it as the most difficult sense to control and the gateway to spiritual realization. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that spiritual life begins with the tongue (jivhadau), specifically through two activities: vibrating the holy name and tasting food offered to Krsna (prasadam). By restricting the tongue to these two functions, the devotee conquers the urge for material sense gratification, purifies their existence, and automatically engages the other senses in the service of the Lord.

  • The Strategic Role of the Tongue: The tongue is considered the most formidable enemy among the senses; however, it is also the primary tool for liberation. By engaging the tongue in tasting prasadam and chanting the holy names, one can easily control the other senses and conquer the dictations of the mind.
  • Purification through Prasadam: Food offered to Krsna is not merely material sustenance but is transcendental and immune to material contamination. Eating prasadam is described as a spiritual infection that gradually cures the material disease, sanctifies the consumer, and awakens dormant love for God.
  • The Principle of the "Prasadarian": A devotee is neither a vegetarian nor a non-vegetarian but strictly a "prasadarian." The focus is not solely on non-violence or health but on accepting only the remnants of sacrifice offered to the Supreme Lord, which frees one from the karmic reactions of sinful killing involved in preparing unoffered food.
  • Practical Application of Sense Control: Control does not mean artificial starvation or fasting but rather the regulated acceptance of Krsna's mercy. By refusing to eat anything not offered to the Deity—including restaurant food or unoffered vegetarian items—the devotee maintains spiritual strength and avoids the downfall caused by the uncontrolled palate.
