Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda identifies a single, recurring diagnosis for all the failures and sufferings of modern civilization: the missing point is Kṛṣṇa. Despite extraordinary progress in science, technology, and material comfort, humanity remains deeply unhappy because the central purpose of life — to love and serve the Supreme Lord — has been forgotten. The innate propensity to love that exists in every living being is being poured into temporary objects and relationships. Until this love is redirected toward Kṛṣṇa, all arrangements for happiness remain fundamentally incomplete.

  • The Defect of Material Civilization: Modern society has built impressive systems of comfort and convenience but has neglected the essential spiritual dimension. Without knowledge of God, of what happens after death, and of the soul's true identity, even the most advanced civilization is fundamentally defective and leaves its members without genuine peace or purpose.
  • The Misdirection of the Loving Propensity: Every living being possesses a natural propensity to love. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that this propensity is never wrong in itself — the error lies in directing it toward temporary, material objects rather than toward Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who alone can fully satisfy the soul.
  • A Society Adrift Without Aim: When God is removed from the center of civilization, the result is confusion, hopelessness, and aimlessness — seen especially among the younger generation. Societies built on sense gratification, however sophisticated, will always end in collective unhappiness because the real point, Kṛṣṇa, is absent from their foundation.
  • Kṛṣṇa Consciousness as the Only Remedy: The Krsna consciousness movement inaugurated by Lord Caitanya is the sole panacea for the diseases of modern civilization. By understanding Kṛṣṇa as the real enjoyer, proprietor, and object of all love, human beings can reclaim the missing point and attain genuine and lasting happiness.
