Theme Analysis

Nescience, or avidyā, is the root cause of the living entity's bondage in the material world. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, the pure spirit soul is constitutionally full of eternal knowledge and bliss, but when it rebels against the Supreme Personality of Godhead, it is placed under the jurisdiction of the Lord's deluding energy. This nescience causes the soul to forget its true identity as a servant of God and instead falsely identify with the gross and subtle material body. Driven by this illusion, the conditioned soul engages in fruitive activities, attempting to lord it over material nature, which only guarantees perpetual suffering in the cycle of birth and death.

Modern civilization is heavily invested in what Śrīla Prabhupāda terms the "culture of nescience." Universities, nationalism, and materialistic science—despite their appearance of advancement—are fundamentally nescient because they ignore the spiritual nature of the soul and focus solely on prolonging bodily comforts and sense gratification. True education (vidyā) aims at self-realization, whereas any knowledge not engaged in the service of the Lord is merely darkness. The Supreme Lord Himself is completely transcendental to both material knowledge and nescience; maya can never influence Him.

To rescue the conditioned souls from this mire of nescience, the all-merciful Lord descends, leaves behind scriptures like the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and sends His representative, the bona fide spiritual master. The spiritual master acts as a torchlight, opening the eyes of the disciple and dissipating the darkness. As famously stated in the motto of Back to Godhead magazine: "Godhead is light. Nescience is darkness. Where there is Godhead there is no nescience." By submissively hearing transcendental knowledge and constantly chanting the holy name of Kṛṣṇa, the devotee easily crosses the dark ocean of material existence and returns to the spiritual world.

  • The Root of Bondage: Nescience (avidyā) causes the pure soul to forget its eternal relationship with Kṛṣṇa and falsely identify with the temporary material body.
  • The Culture of Darkness: Modern education, nationalism, and materialistic science are forms of nescience because they focus on bodily sense gratification rather than self-realization.
  • The Torchlight of Knowledge: The bona fide spiritual master and authorized Vedic scriptures dispel the darkness of nescience, just as the rising sun dissipates a thick fog.
  • Crossing the Ocean: The only way to transcend the miseries of material nescience is through unalloyed devotional service and the chanting of the holy name.
