Theme Analysis

The success of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement depends entirely on the pure behavior of its members. Śrīla Prabhupāda taught that before one can successfully preach to others, they must first strictly follow the regulative principles themselves, setting an impeccable standard. This responsibility falls most heavily upon leaders, sannyāsīs, and senior devotees; if they exhibit weak behavior or fall into material habits, they will lead the incoming devotees to ruination. Furthermore, Śrīla Prabhupāda instructed his disciples to cultivate a deep Vaiṣṇava attitude by tolerating the faults of others, addressing everyone as prabhu (master), and working cooperatively without envy to train the next generation of preachers.

  • Leading by Example: Following the standard set by Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, a devotee must perfectly practice the philosophy before attempting to teach it to others. Preaching without personal purity is useless.
  • The Weight of Leadership: Temple presidents, sannyāsīs, and senior devotees must remain entirely above suspicion. If a leader neglects the principles or engages in unauthorized habits, it creates havoc within the society.
  • Respect and Tolerance: A genuine devotee does not take offense or find fault with others. Instead, they tolerate material discomforts and respectfully address their fellow devotees as master.
  • Cooperative Training: Senior devotees are obligated to pass on the training they received from the spiritual master. This requires leaders to work together harmoniously, completely free from the material disease of envying another's progress.
  • Simplicity and Dependence: Luxury is strictly forbidden for brahmacārīs, sannyāsīs, and vānaprasthas. Only householders who earn their own income are permitted a degree of comfort, and no one is allowed to live luxuriously at the expense of others.
