Theme Analysis

The installation of Deities is not a superficial ceremony or a whimsical decoration; it is the authorized process of inviting the Supreme Personality of Godhead to reside within the temple or home. Because the Lord must be worshipped with the utmost respect and strict regularity, Śrīla Prabhupāda heavily cautioned his disciples against installing Deities prematurely. He established strict prerequisites—such as requiring a permanent location and a sufficient number of initiated brāhmaṇas—to ensure that the standard of worship would never decline and the devotees would be protected from committing severe offenses.

  • The Absolute Need for Qualified Pujaris: A temple must never install Deities if there is a scarcity of trained devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda instituted a strict policy that at least ten initiated brāhmaṇas must be present in a center before Deities can be invited to preside there.
  • The Gradual Progression of Worship: Because Lord Caitanya is incredibly merciful and lenient, neophyte devotees are instructed to begin by worshipping pictures of Guru and Gaurāṅga. Only when a community is thoroughly trained and advanced should they take on the massive responsibility of worshipping Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa or Lord Jagannātha.
  • Permanence and Stability: Deities must be installed in a secure, permanent location rather than a temporary rental or a moving vehicle. Once the Lord is installed, He cannot be removed or relocated whimsically.
  • Avoiding Childish Additions: Worshiping the Deity requires immense focus. Devotees are warned against childishly adding more and more Deities to the altar, which unnecessarily encumbers the pūjārīs and risks a drop in the standard of care.
  • The Householder's Duty: While temple installations require strict community standards, Śrīla Prabhupāda actively encourages sincere householders to install Deities in their own homes under the guidance of the spiritual master, transforming their residences into sacred temples.
