Theme Analysis

The distinction between concocted and spiritual planning lies at the heart of effective devotional service. Within this category, it is evident that Śrīla Prabhupāda considers a "concocted plan" to be any independent scheme born of mental speculation, personal ambition, or an artificial desire for maintenance. Such plans only serve to give trouble to the Lord and distract the practitioner from the actual goal. In contrast, a spiritual plan is an intentional scheme authorized by the spiritual master and aimed exclusively at inducing others to become Kṛṣṇa conscious. The disciples are taught that while they must "tax their brains" to organize festivals, construction, and book distribution, these plans are successful only when they align with the higher scheme revealed by the mahājanas.

  • Following the Supreme Scheme: A devotee does not manufacture their own destiny but follows the footprints of the great authorities, accepting the spiritual master as the guide for all practical planning.
  • Planning for Preaching: While personal planning for maintenance is discouraged, rigorous planning for the expansion of the saṅkīrtana movement is considered a high form of service and mental control.
  • Sanction of the Spiritual Master: No plan, regardless of how well-intentioned, should be executed without the approval and sanction of Kṛṣṇa’s representative, ensuring that all endeavors remain within the jurisdiction of the Lord.
  • Practicality and Simplicity: Spiritual plans should remain practical and flexible, avoiding unnecessary complexity or constant changes that hinder the steady development of the mission.
  • Self-Sufficiency and Vedic Culture: Major organizational plans, such as developing farm communities or building magnificent temples, are intended to establish an ideal, self-sufficient society based on Vedic principles.
