Category:Position of Goodness
Theme Analysis
Within the material world, the mode of goodness (sattva-guṇa) represents the highest and most peaceful platform of existence. It provides the living entity with clarity, joyfulness, and a theoretical understanding of God. However, through the profound teachings of Śrīla Prabhupāda, we learn that this material goodness is not the ultimate goal of life. Because it is a product of material nature, it remains inherently unstable and vulnerable to the contaminating influences of passion and ignorance.
- The Symptoms of Material Goodness: When one is situated in the mode of goodness, the symptoms of happiness develop in every gate of the body. The individual feels internally and externally cleansed, escapes the moroseness of the lower modes, and can theoretically comprehend their spiritual identity and relationship with the Supreme Lord.
- The Vulnerability of the Modes: Material goodness is never absolute. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that as long as one remains in the material world, their position in goodness is constantly attacked by the modes of passion and ignorance, making it a risky and temporary platform.
- Transcending the Material Platform: Goodness is a helpful stepping stone, but it is not the actual cause of spiritual advancement. To achieve true perfection, the living entity must transcend all three material modes—including goodness—because Kṛṣṇa Himself is entirely transcendental to them.
- The State of Pure Goodness: The ultimate destination is the platform of śuddha-sattva or viśuddha-sattva—pure, uncontaminated goodness. In this unmixed state (also known as the position of Vasudeva), there is absolutely no chance of material contamination, and the devotee remains steadily fixed in pure spiritual existence.
- The Path of Elevation: Rising from material darkness to pure goodness is achieved through the process of devotional service, specifically by hearing the holy names of the Lord. This transcendental sound vibration wipes away all material lust and avarice, allowing the candidate to understand the science of God perfectly.

- You have to come above, transcend this position of goodness also. So goodness is not qualification for spiritual advancement, but it is helping. If a man is very good man, then it is helping to spiritual life. But that is not the cause
- You keep yourself always in goodness. Then your position is all right. Otherwise, it is very risky. But these people, the Western people, they do not do that. They keep themselves in the modes of ignorance. That is very risky civilization
